Learning about Ecosystems and Forests

Learning about Ecosystems and Forests (LEAF) advocates for outdoor learning and hands-on experiences, allowing students to connect with nature and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world.

While the LEAF programme started with a focus on tree-based ecosystems and sustainable forest use, today it includes a diversity of ecosystems to foster skills and knowledge by exposing learners to outdoor experiences.

Learning about Ecosystems and Forests is implemented in 28 countries.

LEAF is part of HundrED’s Global Collection 2024!

HundrED has selected LEAF as one of the 100 inspiring innovations that are changing the face of education in a post-COVID world. LEAF has scaled to more than 25 countries already and has the potential to keep growing as the climate crisis and biodiversity loss are global challenges that require collective solutions that start with education.

LEAF provides experiential learning for young people which usually has longer lasting educational outcomes. Exposing young people to the natural environment can foster a deeper sense of connection to the world and global citizenship.

Outdoor Education activities for schools, using nature as a classroom

This Learning about Ecosystems and Forests (LEAF) publication contains twenty-three examples of activities that have been implemented all over the world through the Learning about Forest Programme. By collecting and sharing these stories we aim to promote outdoor education, inspiring schools and teachers on how to use nature as a classroom.
